Elk and Deer Hunting

Indian Summer Outfitters hunts a healthy resident elk herd on the Bitterroot National Forest. We do not rely on migrations to move game into our area. There is a brow tine restriction on bull elk which means antlers must have at least a 4 inch tine on the lower half of the rack. This management regulation ensures our hunters that the Bitterroots have quality bulls to hunt. Elevations hunted are from 5000 to 8000 feet and the terrain goes from the rolling ridge tops to the steep holes where elk like to spend their days. Mule deer are hunted in the same area as the elk. Those mainly targeting deer, or who have already filled their elk tag, may hunt lower elevations as well. Cover varies greatly from timbered ridges and canyons to open meadows, and burns. The open areas are a big part of our hunting strategy. Our terrain and mixed cover provides us with endless opportunities to spot game at distances as opposed to places with seemingly endless timber. Spot and stalk hunting is a big part of our game plan here in the Bitterroots. The reality of it is that hunting isn’t always what you see on television. If you aren’t asking about cover and terrain as you choose your outfitter then how do you know what your days will consist of? We are thankful to be able to hunt the area we call home and consider it some of the best Montana or anywhere in the west has to offer. That is the first step to providing our clients with successful hunts.

Is elk hunting easy? No. We feel it’s best to be honest with our clients. Hunting in the mountains can be very physically demanding. We realize that there are lots of factors in the type of hunt we plan for you. Obviously one is your physical ability. The other is your goal. Hardcore hunters may find it hard to imagine why some would want to hunt closer to camp or stop in one afternoon to take a shower. People who come to enjoy all of the aspects of their hunt without working like a dog and hope to ice the cake with a bull or buck may not perceive how someone could literally pound themselves from dark to dark every day and call it fun. We understand both of these ways of thinking and that is the second step to planning a hunt that each of our clients considers a success. We’ve hosted hunters, and non-hunters from 12 to 80 and obviously we wouldn’t want to send them all afield with the same strategy. Regardless of your goals or physical condition the most important thing hunters can do is come prepared with a positive attitude.

An added bonus: Several of the units we are permitted to hunt in are trophy units managed for world class mule deer bucks. If hunters are successful in drawing one of these permits we can guarantee the mule deer hunt of a lifetime. There is no extra charge to apply for these permits. Our pack in area is on the border of one of these units. Having these units adjacent to our pack in area, to which we have exclusive outfitting rights, gives our hunters quality deer hunting for great elk/deer combo hunts. The mule deer licenses in the pack in area are guaranteed.
